It's hard to beat the classic combo of pickle relish, onions and mustard on a hot dog - this onion & stone ground mustard relish takes that combo to the next level.
I LOVE tangy condiments on hot dogs - mustard, onions, pickles, sauerkraut - you name it. We took advantage of a few of those favorites to make a quick relish with our favorite grainy mustard, sweet onions and dill pickles.
We used a cast iron grill pan to grill our hot dogs indoors for a quick and easy weeknight dinner. Our favorite is this Lodge grill pan - the price is right and the pan comes PRE-SEASONED. Seasoning is by far the most time consuming part of cast iron, but now we get the benefits without all the work (!!!).
AND if you happen to be into bread making as much as it seems literally EVERYBODY is right now, you can even whip up your own hot dog buns. I've always loved the New England style buns - and fell in love with this New England Style Hot Dog Pan from USA Pan. Think of all the toppings! Poppy seeds! Sesame seeds! The sky's the limit! If you're looking for a fun and relatively easy project, this might just be it. Here's the recipe we used for the hot dog buns in this post.
Hot Dogs with Onion & Stone Ground Mustard Relish
Yield: 8 Hot Dogs
INGREDIENTS
½ cup Sweet Onion, chopped fine
½ cup Pickles, minced
¼ cup Whole Grain Mustard
Salt, to taste
8 Hot Dogs
8 Hot Dog Buns
DIRECTIONS
1. Make the relish: in a small bowl, toss together onion, pickles and whole grain mustard. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes for flavors to meld.
2. Grill the hot dogs: preheat a cast iron grill pan or a gas/charcoal grill to medium-high heat. Grill hot dogs on all sides until heated through. If desired, brush hot dog buns with butter and grill as well.
3. Assemble hot dogs: place grilled hot dogs in buns and top with relish and any other toppings.
